Stop violence against women: EP lit up in orange

25-11-2015

On Wednesday 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Parliament asked the Commission what new measures it planned to take to prevent gender-based violence against women in the EU and whether it could propose an EU directive on combating violence against women, as requested by Parliament in 2014.

On Wednesday 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Parliament asked the Commission what new measures it planned to take to prevent gender-based violence against women in the EU and whether it could propose an EU directive on combating violence against women, as requested by Parliament in 2014.

MEPs claim that little progress has been made to eliminate violence against women and call on member states to ratify the Istanbul Convention as soon as possible.

"We face the greatest social scourge that exists right now, and although we have to stand up and fight these crimes every day and on all fronts, November 25 must serve to ensure greater visibility and mobilize consciences," said Iratxe GARCÍA PÉREZ (S&D,ES), chair of the women's rights and gender equality committee.

As levels of protection of women against violence differ widely between the 28 EU member states, many MEPs believe that the problem must be tackled at EU level.

Among several questions, MEPs asked the Commission if it could evaluate the transposal into national law in the member states of the Directive on the European Protection order and say when the implementation report would be published. They also asked if the Commission would evaluate the need to activate the passerelle clause by including gender based violence as an area of crime.
