The European Parliament regularly commissions surveys on public opinion in the Member States. This is a means of keeping Parliament in touch with people's perceptions and expectations of its work and that of the European Union generally. The surveys are also extremely useful at the preparation, decision-making and evaluation stages of parliamentary business.
Readers will find them a source of information not only about attitudes in the EU to climate change or the current economic situation but also about how people see - and what they expect from - European elections, the European Parliament and European integration in general.
Ireland: European identity and citizenship
This survey focuses on questions about European identity and citizenship in the period 2007-2015. The findings show, amongst others, that the single currency is the main element of European identity for Irish citizens, followed by the values of democracy and freedom, which top the list at EU level. Regarding European citizenship, a European social welfare system harmonized between the Member States (healthcare, education, pensions, etc.) is the first element mentioned at EU level, and the second one by the Irish respondents who cite in the first place “Being able to move to any EU country after retirement and taking the pension with them“ (especially mentioned by the oldest generations).
