The EU Commmunication Challenge: Competition for third-level media students launched
On Friday 27 April, the European Parliament Office in Ireland hosted a workshop for third-level media students entitled 'The EU Communication Challenge'. Participants heard from Paddy Smyth from the Irish Times, Labour MEP Phil Prendergast and freelance Brussels-based journalist, Sarah Collins, as they gave their impressions of the difficulties associated with communicating EU-related issues. Participants then tried it out for themselves in a variety of working groups, each producing a 3-minute news report on their assigned topic. The event concluded with the launch of the EU Communication Challenge competition. The competition is open to all third-level students and the prize is participation in a seminar for working journalists in Brussels in the autumn of this year. The closing date for entries is Wednesday, 22 June 2012.

Recent events
A group of 15 professional business graduates from Taiwan, who are in Ireland for two months to gain work experience with various Irish companies in different industries, visited the European Parliament Office today. The group, whose stay is being facilitated by DCU, were given a presentation by the Head of Office on the history and evolving objectives of the EU.
Members from an Age & Opportunity group from Co. Clare visited the EP office in Dublin today. The Group, who travelled from Ennis, Kilkee and Kilrush, were briefed by the Head of Office on the general history of the EU and its institutions, relations between Ireland and the EU, the specific role and activities of the European Parliament and the work of the Irish MEPs, etc. A number of issues such as the implications of EU water policy were subsequently raised. The visit forms part of the Office's actions to mark the Year of Active Ageing.
27 students from St. Mary's College in Arklow www.stmarysarklow.ie visited the European Parliament's Information Office in Dublin today to hear all about the work of the European Parliament and the Irish MEPs.
Members from an Age & Opportunity group from Connemara visited the EP office in Dublin today. The Group were briefed on the history and policies of the EU. An energetic question and answer session followed which covered topics ranging from Iran's nuclear programme to local turf-cutting. The visit forms part of the Office's actions to mark the Year of Active Ageing.

Economic governance
In autumn 2010 the EU agreed to tighten financial supervision in the private sector in an effort to head off any future financial crisis. A year later the public sector was under the spotlight as the EP tackled dangerous imbalances in EU economies and considered new rules meant to limit the growth of debt and deficits in the member states. The European Commission should have more control over fiscal policy in EU Member States, but not the free rein it asked for, says the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee in texts, voted on Monday, stating a position on the economic governance "two pack". This increased power must be democratically controlled and serve to spur economic growth, MEPs say.
The Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee took a unanimous stand on the latest bank capital requirements legislation on Monday 14 May. The vote gives Parliament's negotiators, led by rapporteur Othmar Karas (EPP, AT), a strong hand in pushing its reform agenda with Member States.
"Europe on the Ground", a Greek youth media project, was awarded first prize at the 2012 Charlemagne Youth Prize ceremony on 15 May in Aachen. Second prize went to Europe Meets School, an exchange programme for Erasmus students (Czech Republic) and the winner of the third prize was the Cycle Me Home project, a documentary road-movie (Hungary). The Charlemagne Youth Prize is awarded annually to projects that foster a shared sense of European identity and integration among young people.
The first prize was awarded by EP president Martin Schulz, the second by former EP president Hans-Gert Pöttering and the third by the Mayor of Aachen, Marcel Philip.

EU aviation policy must pay special attention to the needs of regional airports, says a resolution adopted by Parliament on 10 May.
The cost of using mobile phones, smartphones and tablets when travelling abroad within the EU will fall sharply from 1 July this year, under an agreement with the Council endorsed by Parliament on Thursday. The new rules will also enable clients to buy roaming services from suppliers other than their home service suppliers and open up the market to new entrants, so as to boost competition and thus reduce prices.
"No one stands in greater need of a growth pact today than the young: the present young generation in Europe is in danger of being sacrificed to the financial crisis - of becoming our continent's 'lost generation'. It was not young people who caused the crisis, yet they are paying a disproportionately high price to rescue States and banks. Already, one in four Europeans under the age of 25 is unemployed, and in many countries the figure is one in two."

A breast implant register, more stringent checks and product traceability, and a pre-market authorisation system are among the measures proposed by the Environment and Public Health Committee on Wednesday to prevent a recurrence of the PIP defective breast implants case. The resolution was passed unanimously.
