MEP Replacement Lists 2009 Elections
In Ireland, there are no by-elections to the European Parliament. If an MEP resigns from office or dies during his or her mandate, the vacancy is filled from a replacement list, which is presented by parties or independent candidates to the returning officer in their constituency prior to each European election. The relevant replacement lists so submitted prior to the 2009 elections were as listed below, with those on the lists who have become MEPs (either directly in 2009 or subsequently as replacements) indicated in brackets.
It should also be noted that a number of others on these lists have since been elected TD or Senator, and are thus currently ineligible as replacement MEPs by virtue of the European ban on the dual mandate.
