Irish Referendum Information

Voting in a referendum

Irish citizens aged 18 or over and resident in Ireland may vote in constitutional referendums.

You can check the electoral register online at www.checktheregister.ie or at your local library or garda station. If you are entitled to vote but not already registered to vote, you can register via your local city or county council.

For further details on voting procedures and the register of electors, see http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/government-in-ireland/elections-and-referenda/voting

The Referendum Commission

Before every referendum, a Referendum Commission is established. Its main role is to explain the subject matter of referendum proposals, promote awareness of the referendum and encourage people to turn out and vote. See the Referendum Commission website at www.refcom.ie, contact them at (01)6395695 or email them at refcom@ombudsman.gov.ie .
