Cavan CAP Forum takes a critical look at the proposed reforms : A full house attended a cross-border forum in Cavan on Friday last, 25th November, where the proposed changes to the Common Agriculture Policy were outlined by speakers that included MEPs Mairead McGuinness, Bairbre de Brún and Esther de Lange of the Netherlands, as well as Neil Parish, a member of the UK House of Commons who had previously chaired the EP Agriculture Committee.

European Parliament Journalism Prize 2011 winners are from France, Italy, Finland and Germany : French, Italian, Finnish and German journalists this morning received the European Parliament's fourth annual prize for excellence in journalism from President Jerzy Buzek.
The winners, in four categories, written press, internet, TV and radio, each received €5,000.

European Parliament Prize for Journalism 2011 Award Ceremony : General
The European Parliament's fourth annual prize for excellence in journalism will be awarded by President Jerzy Buzek on Wednesday 19 October. The prize goes to journalists who have covered major European issues or promoted a better understanding of EU institutions and policies. The award ceremony starts at 09.00h in the plenary chamber.
Juries of journalists in each EU Member State selected 64 national winners: 21 in the written press category, 16 for radio, 15 in the television category and 12 for internet. The award jury in Brussels, composed of three MEPs and six journalists, has since selected one final EU winner for each category: written press, radio, TV and the Internet. Each winner will receive €5000.

Citizens Forum on Water Issues : MEPs Sean Kelly and Phil Prendergast will host a public forum on water policy in Clonmel on Friday 21st October.
The meeting will concentrate on flooding, water quality and water charges.
An expert group of speakers are lined up from the Economic and Social Research Institute, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Office of Public Works and the National Forum of Flood Communities.
The meeting will also feature a question and answer session.
The meeting will be held in the Clonmel Park Hotel and will commence at 9.30 am. Members of the public are welcome to attend and admission is free of charge.

1 October 2011 - An Taoiseach to address a major business event "SMEs Doing Business in Europe" : A significant event for small and medium businesses considering doing business in Europe is taking place in Knockranny House Hotel, Westport on Saturday 1st October. Entitled "SMEs Doing Business in Europe", it is co-hosted by Network Mayo and the European Parliament's Information Office in Ireland. An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, TD, will make a formal address and the event will be chaired by Marian Harkin, MEP. This half day event is free of charge but pre-registration is essential.

Marian Harkin MEP launches European Year of Volunteering Roadshow : Marian Harkin MEP launched the European Year of Volunteering Roadshow at European Union House today, Monday 22 August, at 11 am. The Roadshow features a number of varied activities that will be of interest to all groups and all ages. Ms Harkin was instrumental in having 2011 designated as European Year of Volunteering.

DCU student wins this year's EU Communication Challenge : Niamh Griffin from Glanmire in Cork has won this year's EU Communication Challenge - a competition for media students organised by the European Parliament and European Commission offices in Ireland. Niamh, a Masters of Journalism student at Dublin City University, participated in this year's EU Communication Challenge workshop on 15 April and put the skills she acquired to good use in her entry entitled 'Know what's in your fish fingers'. As her prize, Niamh will travel to Brussels later this year to participate in a seminar for working journalists organised by the European Parliament and the European Commission. Responding to the news, Niamh said that she was 'looking forward to having this chance to look behind the scenes at the EU institutions, to see how they can be reported on and how issues relevant to us here are covered.'

Chair of EP delegation says that Ireland is on the right track and the era of surprises is over : A senior delegation of MEPs from the European Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee concludes its visit to Ireland today. Having met with the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD, the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr Patrick Honohan, members of a Special Committee of the Dáil and key representatives of the institutions in charge of economic, financial and monetary matters in Ireland, the Chairperson of the Committee, Sharon Bowles MEP said that 'Ireland has the recipe to respond to the economic and banking crisis, but is being treated harshly by its EU partners. The delegation had a sense of things being on the right track and that the Government has taken ownership of the situation.'

Two Irish journalists to compete for 2011 EP Journalism Prize : Two Irish journalists have been selected as the Irish nominees for this year's European Parliament Journalism Prize. 355 journalists submitted applications across the EU's 27 Member States and in October of this year, the prize, now in its fourth year, will be awarded to four journalists in the categories of print journalism, radio, TV and internet. This year's Irish nominees are Jamie Smyth, Social Affairs Correspondent with The Irish Times for his article on Ireland's sham marriage scam and Ellen Gunning of Dublin City FM, for her interview with European Commissioner Máire Geoghegan Quinn, as part of her series, The EU and You. Both entries were chosen by the Irish jury because of the manner in which they promoted a better understanding of an EU issue, institution or policy area.

Ireland's 'Captain Europe' sets off for the European Parliament in Strasbourg : Twenty four Transition Year students from Coláiste Chiaráin in Leixlip will travel to Strasbourg this week to participate in the European Parliament's Euroscola programme alongside secondary school students from the EU's 26 other Member States. The Coláiste Chiaráin students, with their 'Captain Europe' video, succeeded in wowing the panel of judges at the finals of this year's My Vision for Europe competition at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) in Dublin on 11 March. All participating schools had put together a 4-minute video portraying their Vision for Europe. On the day of the finals, five Irish secondary schools (the chosen regional finalists for this year's My Vision for Europe competition) competed to impress a judging panel which included Nicky Phelan of Brown Bag films, Alicia McGivern, Head of Education at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) in Dublin and Francis Jacobs, Head of the European Parliament Office in Ireland.

Award-winning film - Die Fremde - to be shown at European Union House on 9 May : On Monday, 9 May, the award-winning film, Die Fremde, directed by Feo Aladag, will be shown at a free screening to mark Europe Day at European Union House in Dublin. This event is being organised by the European Parliament Office in Ireland, in conjunction with the Austrian Embassy and the Goethe Institut. Die Fremde was the winner of the European Parliament's LUX prized in 2010. The screening will begin at 6.30pm and will be followed by a wine reception.

Competition for third-level media students launched - The EU Communication Challenge : On Friday, 15 April, the European Parliament and European Commission offices in Ireland hosted a workshop for third-level media students entitled 'The EU Communication Challenge'. Participants heard from RTÉ's European Correspondent, Paul Cunningham, Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell and freelance journalist, Jessie Magee, as they gave their impressions of the difficulties associated with communicating EU-related issues. Participants then tried it out for themselves in a variety of working groups, each producing a 3-minute news report on their assigned topic. The event concluded with the launch of The EU Communication Challenge competition. The competition is open to all third-level students and the prize is participation in a seminar for working journalists in Brussels in the autumn of this year. The closing date for entries is Wednesday, 15 June 2011.

Irish nominee announced for European Youth Prize : 'Show Racism the Red Card', an intercultural camp for 11-16 year old boys and girls, has been chosen as the Irish entry for this year's Charlemagne European Youth Prize, which will be awarded in Aachen, Germany on 31 May 2011. Darja Isajeva, a young Latvian organiser living in Ireland, submitted the project as an example of a project which brought together young people from a number of different countries, promoting an understanding among them of the values of integration and cultural diversity. The camp took place in Glencolmcille in Donegal in July of last year and was attended by young people from Ireland, Poland, Slovenia, England, the Congo, India, Iran, Japan, Kurdistan, South Africa and the Ukraine. The volunteers who ran the camp also came from a range of different European countries. The participants were introduced to new languages, games and competitions.

A fictional 'Captain Europe' wins the day for Coláiste Chiaráin students : Twenty four Transition Year students from Coláiste Chiaráin in Leixlip succeeded in wowing the panel of judges at today's finals of the 2011 My Vision for Europe competition. The students explained to the judges why they had chosen to put together a 3-minute video examining the complexities and implications of EU Member State stereotypes and the powers of a fictional 'Captain Europe' who called on the Member States to 'eurofy'. The Coláiste Chiaráin students, together with students from the Methodist College in Belfast, will participate in the European Parliament's Euroscola programme in Strasbourg on 19 May. Announcing the winners of this year's competition, the Oscar-nominated Nicky Phelan of Brown Bag films said 'I hope this experience will inspire these students to become the next generation of Irish film-makers.'

Waterford student wins trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg for her class : Katie Ní Urmholtaigh, a second year student from Meánscoil San Nioclás, An Rinn, Co. Waterford has won this year's European Parliament bookmark competition and will now bring the rest of her class to Strasbourg on 10 June to participate in the European Parliament's Junior Euroscola programme. The competition invited 14-16 year old students to design a bookmark based on one of six themes. Katie gave her bookmark the title 'Europe sowing the seed for a better environment.'

Five Irish schools chosen to compete in this year's My Vision for Europe final : Teams from Loreto Abbey in Dalkey, Coláiste Chiaráin in Leixlip, Mercy College in Sligo, Presentation Secondary School in Thurles and Methodist College in Belfast have won the regional stages of this year's My Vision for Europe competition and will now compete in the final, to be held at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) on Friday, 11 March. All are competing for the opportunity to travel to Strasbourg on 19 May to participate in the European Parliament's Euroscola programme together with students from the EU's 26 other Member States. This year, the competing teams responded to two challenges in their four minute videos - three of the finalists chose to present the story of Captain Europe and his/her powers, while the other two chose to present their vision of what the EU will be like in 2050.

The future Common Fisheries Policy must allow for a regional approach to regional issues : This morning Ireland's three MEPs for the North West constituency - Pat the Cope Gallagher (Fianna Fáil), Marian Harkin (Independent) and Jim Higgins (Fine Gael) -joined Seán O'Donoghue of the Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation (KFO) in calling for a decentralised approach to the implementation of a new EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). They were attending a packed seminar in Sligo, during which those attending gave their views on a potential strategy for Ireland in the context of the review of the EU's CFP. The MEPs listened to presentations from representatives of Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the Marine Institute, the Irish Fish Producers' Organisation and Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation and acknowledged the frustration among those attending. They pointed to the new role for the European Parliament in decision-making on the new CFP as a result of the Lisbon Treaty and assured those attending that they would work together on this when the CFP comes before the Parliament for discussion and voting.

European Parliament launches 2011 Prize for Journalists : On Friday, 14 January, the European Parliament launched the 2011 Prize for Journalists. The EP Prize for Journalism is awarded each year in four categories - print, radio, television and online - to journalists who have written an article or worked on a programme which clarified an EU issue or promoted a better understanding of the EU's policies. In 2010, an Irish radio entry, submitted by Máirín Ní Ghadhra of Raidió na Gaeltachta, was selected to compete at European level by a panel of Irish journalists (see photo). The closing date for the 2011 prize is 31 March.

St. Colman's College participate in EuroMedScola : From 13-14 November, the EuroMedScola Programme played host to 250 students and their teachers from 27 EU member states and 13 Mediterranean countries: Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, Morocco, Mauretania, Tunisia and Turkey.
Five students from St. Colman's College in Claremorris, Co. Mayo, represented Ireland at the event. The students stepped into the shoes and sat in the seats of MEPs as they participated in the EuroMedScola programme in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The students dealt with issues normally dealt with by the MEPs and, according to EP President Jerzy Buzek, "We can be proud of their responsibility for the future of the Euro-Mediterranean region, which showed these young people to be future political leaders."

Our Lady of Mercy Beaumont Dublin visit the European Parliament : Pupils from Our Lady of Mercy Beaumont visited the European Parliament offices in Dublin last week to prepare for their trip to Strasbourg to participate in Euroscola on 28th October 2011. Proinsias De Rossa, MEP, addressed the group and gave a very informative talk on the work of an MEP and how the European Parliament operates.
We hope the girls enjoy their visit to the European Parliament.

Model Council Winners - Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny : In March 2011 three Loreto students from Loreto Secondary School in Kilkienny travelled to Dublin Castle to participate in a mock European Council debate. The students, Niamh Tuohy, Niamh Dhondt and Clodagh Phelan, represented Sweden in a debate on the extension of maternity leave within the EU. The girls were chosen as the winners out of 28 other schools and won a trip to Euroscola for themselves and twenty-one of their classmates.
"On the day in Strasbourg we were treated to breakfast with our European peers. Shortly afterwards we were taken to the chamber where we were given a brief insight into the European Parliament. One of our students, Niamh Tuohy, then introduced our school and country to the parliament as did representatives of the 26 other member states. Niamh and the English representative were the only people to greet the parliament in a language other than English. These introductions were followed by an insightful question and answer session with members of the parliament. We then ate lunch in the parliament and partook in an activity named Eurogames. In the afternoon we formed discussion groups and later presented our findings to the parliament. Some of the topics of discussion included freedom of information, renewable energies and Europe's future. We were delighted to get the chance to feature prominently in the discussions. After these proposals the finals of the Eurogames took place with one of our students, Meghan O' Keefe, taking first place. A highly enjoyable and unforgettable trip was experienced by us all."

Bookmark Competition Winners Meánscoil San Nioclás in Strasbourg
(Click here to view the winning bookmark) : Katie Ní Urmholtaigh from Meánscoil San Nioclás, Rinn Ó gCuanach in Waterford won the Design a Bookmark Competition for her school and they travelled to Strasbourg to participate in the Junior Euroscola on 10th June. Posters were produced of the winning design along with the runners-up and are on public display at our offices in Molesworth Street, Dublin.

St. Patrick's Classical School, Navan on top in debate challenge : St. Patrick's transition-year students have won this year's EU debate organised by Meath Co. Council Library Service. Close runners-up were O'Carolan College, Nobber, who very keenly contested the debate 'Ireland's future is fully dependent on the EU'. The final took place in the European Food and Veterinary Centre at Grange, Co. Meath on 13th May. The winners will travel to Strasbourg in the autumn to participate in Euroscola at the European Parliament.

Coláiste Chiaráin, Leixlip, winners of My Vision for Europe : This year's winners of the My Vision for Europe competition, Coláiste Chiaráin, travelled to Strasbourg and participated in Euroscola on 19th May. Their winning clip 'Captain Europe' (watch it on youtube) examined the complexities and implications of EU Member State sterotypes and their Captain Europe delivered his message to all Member States to 'eurofy'. The students were very proud to make their introductory speech in Irish on the day and the trip was a huge success. Well done to all !

Winners of the 2011 Graduate.ie Quiz : The winners of the 2011 Graduate.ie quiz gathered in Dublin today to prepare for their trip to Strasbourg to represent Ireland in the European Parliament's Euroscola programme this Friday. The 24 students took part in the 'Ireland in the EU' quiz to test their knowledge of European affairs before they departed for Strasbourg.

St. Patrick's College, Cork attend Euroscola : TY students from St. Patrick's College, Gardiner's Hill, Cork, travelled to Strasbourg on 8th April to participate in Euroscola. Before they went Seán Kelly, MEP, visited the school and gave a very informative talk on Europe and the European Parliament helping the girls to prepare for Euroscola. The girls enjoyed the visit to Strasbourg and particularly their day at the European Parliament representing Ireland at Euroscola.

Mary Immaculate Secondary School Lisdoonvarna travel to Strasbourg : Students from Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare, attended Euroscola on St. Patrick's Day. The students designed a t-shirt displaying the European Union map and their logo 'United We Stand, Divided We Fall' which they wore on the day. The school also organised a very successful 'Taste of Europe' day at their school with the participation of Marian Harkin, MEP.

Rotary Youth Leadership Competition Winners travel to Strasbourg : The 24 winners of this year's Rotary Youth Leadership Competition visited the Dáil and Stormont before taking part in the European Parliament's Euroscola in Strasbourg on 11th March 2011. The students represented Counties Antrim, Armagh, Cork, Derry, Donegal, Down, Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick, Roscommon, Tyrone, Waterford and Wexford. The group met the Bulgarian Ambassador, His Excellency Emil Yalnazov, in Dublin before departing for Strasbourg. The Rotary Youth Leadership Competition is an all-Ireland annual event aimed at helping young people prepare for their future careers. The winners are judged solely on their potential as leaders from around 1,800 applicants across Ireland.

European Studies Winners participate in Euroscola : 48 young people from Ireland's 32 counties participated in the European Parliament's Euroscola programme in Strasbourg on Thursday, 10 February. The young people, aged between 16 and 18, were the winners of this year's European Studies competition which focused on the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals. As part of the competition, they had researched this topic and produced a leaflet informing fellow students about the Goals and the progress countries had made in achieving these Goals. The students joined counterparts from the EU's 26 other Member States, debating a range of issues, presenting their opinions and attempting to reach consensus decisions. All agreed that it was a worthwhile and informative visit.

St Flannans transition year students will participate in Euroscola
on 24 September
: This year's winners of the "Model Council of the European Union" debate organised by the European Commission Representation will travel to Strasbourg with their class to participate in the Euroscola programme. 29 schools from across Ireland met in Dublin Castle on 2 March 2010 to debate a mock EU Directive on the use of electric cars in Europe.

St Mary's Diocesan School Drogheda will travel to Strasbourg
on 21 May
: A group from St Mary's Diocesan School Drogheda will travel to Strasbourg on 21 May to take part in the Euroscola programme, a prize for their success in the 'My Vision for Europe' competition which is an all-Ireland competition where students compete in presenting their thoughts on the future of the European Union using Youtube videos.

St Brigids Presentation Secondary School travelled to Strasbourg : A group of 25 year transition and fifth year students from Killarney attended the Euroscola Programme of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 9 May to mark Europe Day and the 60th Anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration".

St Mary's College Galway travel to Strasbourg : Secondary school students from St Mary's College, Galway, will participate in the Euroscola programme on 29 April in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. They will be accompanied by their teachers Bartley Fannin and Maura Geoghegan.
Joining other secondary schools from EU member states, they will spend the day exchanging ideas on various topics and experiencing what it is like to be a Member of the European Parliament : Read all about their trip below:

St Columba's Transition year pupils participate in Euroscola : On 28 April a group of transition students from St. Columba's College Donegal will travel to Strasbourg to participate in the Euroscola programme. These transition year pupils are being taught European Studies as part of their Transition Year Programme. They are linked up with schools from Dublin. Belfast, Poland, Slovakia and work on different projects throughout the year. They have competed many times in the National Forum on Europe Public Speaking Competitions.

THE Michael Sweetman Education Trust (MSET) : In 1976 friends and associates of the late Michael Sweetman established an Educational Trust in his memory. It was decided to establish a competition with a European dimension for students of VEC Schools, Colleges and Centres and each year prize winners are awarded a trip to Strasbourg.

The Graduate Euroscola on 23 April : On 23 April, 25 Irish secondary schools students, winners of this year's Graduate Online Youth Quiz, will participate in the European Parliament's EUROSCOLA programme, representing Ireland in Strasbourg. The 'Graduate Online Youth Quiz' is a free on-line educational Quiz for primary and post primary students throughout Ireland. During the Euroscola day, the students will get the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the workings of the European Parliament.

St Louis Rathmines travels to Strasbourg : St Louis High School Rathmines were one of the winning schools who entered the 'A Europe for all' competition organised by the European Studies Office. Eight students entered the competition and created a pamphlet regarding inequality in our society. They travelled out to Strasbourg on 21 January to participate in the Euroscola programme on 22 January.

Rotary Youth Leadership competition : This competition had over 1900 applications from students throughout Ireland, aged between 16-18 years. 24 students are the result of some 200 interviews all over Ireland. The winners are judged solely on their potential as leaders.
The week long programme starts in Belfast with a visit to Stormont. Here they meet MLA from all parties, and after a question and answer time they will sit in an assembly session. They have also included trips to Belfast City Hall, a visit to the European Parliament office in Dublin where they will prepare for their Euroscola day in Strasbourg on 23 February, then a visit the Dail to meet TD/Senators and sit in on debates in chambers.

September 2009: St Colman's College, Co Mayo : A group of 11 students from St. Colman's College participated in the Euroscola programme with students from 23 member states on Friday, 18 September. Keith Hennelly, one of the St. Colman's students was further honoured by being given the task of interviewing Socialist Party MEP Joe Higgins.

25 Mayo students from Davitt College participate in Euroscola : A group of twenty-five students and three teachers from Davitt College, Co. Mayo represented Ireland in the Euroscola programme of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 23 February 2010. The group was recommended by the European Parliament Office in Dublin, on the strength of their European studies and projects. This is one of the modules in the Transition Year programme in Davitt College, and the school has been heavily involved in European projects over the past 30 years.

Mercy Secondary School, Kilbeggan took part in a Euroscola day in Strasbourg : 8 transition students from Mercy Secondary School Kilbeggan took part in a Euroscola day in Strasbourg. Winners of the European Business Studies competition "A Europe for all" joined the other winning schools from both Southern and Northern Ireland for the day. Portlaoise College 5th year students in the European Parliament : Today the European Parliament Information Office in Ireland welcomed fifth year students from Portlaoise College to its offices in Molesworth Street, Dublin. The group had visited Dáil Eireann earlier in the day.
The visit and study exercise formed part of the students European Studies module. During the visit several students had tasks to complete which they did admirably.
There was great excitement during the EU Quiz and all the teams did exceptionally well with 'Team Portlaoise Shore' taking first prize. Well done to all the teams who took part!

Visit from third years at Sion Hill Dominican College : The third years from Sion Hill Dominican College, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, visited the European Parliament today to gather information for their project on the European Parliament and the European Union. The project is part of their CSPE studies and they will sit their Junior Cert in June. The girls were very well prepared for their visit and asked lots of interesting questions. Team 'Googlez' were the winners in the Euro Quiz. Good luck with your project girls !

Wilson's Hospital School, Multyfarnham, Co. Westmeath visits EP : Yesterday's torrential rain did not deter an enthusiastic group of third year students from Wilson's Hospital School from making the trip to Dublin to visit the information office of the European Parliament. As part of their CSPE studies the students found out about the European Union and its institutions and in particular the work of the European Parliament and its MEPs. The DVD 'Ireland and the EU' put Ireland's membership of the EU in context and 11 teams participated in our quiz. Full marks go to the winning team 'Blackshirts' with an incredible 25 out of 25 - well done!! The group combined their Parliament trip with a visit to the Dáil in the afternoon.

TY students from Gorey Community School at the European Parliament : A group of transition students from Gorey Community School in Co. Wexford braved the elements yesterday and travelled to Dublin to visit the European Parliament information office. The students were informed about the European Parliament, the Irish MEPs, the day-to-day schedule of an MEP and how the European Union functions. The group viewed the DVD 'Ireland and the EU' which gives details of Ireland's membership of the EU. The group then took part in our quiz and congratulations to all on their high scores. Well done to Team 'Stars' who were the overall winners.

Visit by Sixth Class, Scoil Mochua, Celbridge, Co. Kildare : Sixty pupils from 6th class in Scoil Mochua visited the European Parliament on Wednesday, 23rd November. The group had already visited Dáil Eireann earlier that morning. The pupils learned about the important role languages play in an institution like the European Parliament with 23 official working languages. Lots of questions were asked by the enthusiastic pupils. They watched a DVD on the work carried out by Parliament and then took part in a Quiz. The winning team was 'Group One' and well done to all the teams. A busy day was had by all.

Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education : On Monday, 21 November a group of European Studies students from Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education visited the European Parliament in Molesworth Street. The group received a talk on the European Parliament and its political activities. Francis Jacobs gave a talk on the European Parliament and the European Union and answered several questions on policy areas such as culture and the economy. Hopefully the information will help the students with their assignments which are due next week!

Portlaoise College visits the European Parliament : The European Parliament's Dublin Office welcomed a group of 6th year business students and Post-Leaving Certificate students from Portlaoise College today.
Following a presentation on the European Parliament and the work of our MEPs the group viewed a DVD on Ireland's membership of the EU. Harry O'Connor explained how European legislation is formed. Harry also covered policies such as the CAP, the Single Market, the Habitats Directive and a very lively questions and answers session followed.

Skerries Community College in the European Parliament : Sixth year students from Skerries Community College braved the elements on one of the wettest October days in living memory and travelled to the city centre to visit the European Parliament in Molesworth Street.
In preparation for Business Studies in their Leaving Cert next year Harry O'Connor gave a talk on policy making and the legislative process in the European Union. The students also saw the film 'Ireland and the EU'.

Pearse College, Dublin, visits the European Parliament : Students from Pearse College of Further Education in Crumlin visited the European Parliament offices today. As part of their Intensive European Language Skills course they take a European Studies Module. At the end of the one-year course students will be awarded a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Language and European Studies.
Anne McEvoy gave an introduction to the European Parliament and how it works along with information on the 12 Irish MEPs and European elections. The group viewed a short film 'Ireland and the European Union' and a Questions and Answers session followed chaired by Mr Francis Jacobs, Head of the European Parliament Office in Ireland. Some very interesting questions were raised by the students and they hope to follow up their visit with a trip to the European Parliament in Brussels!

European Parliament's Regional Week 2011 - visit to Gorey Community College : As part of the European Parliament's South East Regional Week 2011, Anne McEvoy visited Gorey Community School on Monday, 17th October.
Anne spoke to a group of Third Year and Transition Year students and gave a presentation on the European Parliament and the institutions of the European Union. The students viewed a DVD 'Ireland and the European Union' and then took part in the Euro Quiz. Congratulations to the 'Third Years' team who won first prize followed closely by the runners up 'The Pirates' team.
The visit was facilitated by Mrs Mercedes Reynolds to whom we extend our thanks for all her help in organising the visit.

Blessington No. 1 School visits the European Parliament : Pupils from 5th and 6th class at Blessington No. 1 School visited the European Parliament offices in Dublin on Wednesday, 28th September. Their visit was combined with a guided tour of the Dáil where they met Simon Harris, TD.
The students took part in the Euro Quiz and a very exciting tie breaker resulted in the "Euro Stars" Team winning first prize. The pupils displayed a great knowledge of Europe. Well done to all eight teams !

Lycée Professionnel de Saint-Pierre, Reunion Island : A visit took place on Friday, 9th September by a group of students from Reunion Island. Reunion is a French island with a population of about 800,000 located in the Indian Ocean. The students were in Ireland gaining work experience as part of their college training and were based in the Bray area. Various topics were discussed such as the EU's policies on the environment and commodity prices.

Six Schools selected to take part in the My Vision for Europe Final : Six finalists have been selected to compete in the My Vision for Europe video clip schools competition. The final will take place on Friday, 2nd March in the Irish Film Institute in Dublin. The prize is a trip to Strasbourg to participate in the European Parliament's Euroscola Programme. The six schools competing on 2nd March are: St. Dominic's College, Cabra, Dublin, Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, Tralee, Co. Kerry; St. Mary's Diocesan School, Drogheda, Co. Louth; St. Columba's College, Stranorlar, Co. Donegal; Strathearn School, Belfast and Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch, Co. Down.

My vision for Europe : The 2012 Transition Year competition, My Vision for Europe, has just been launched. Teams of up to 24 students are invited to produce and direct their own short video, expressing their ideas, views and vision for Europe. The prize is a subsidised trip for the team and two teachers to travel to Strasbourg to participate in the Euroscola Programme, the pan European youth forum where students experience a day in the life of a Member of the European Parliament.
